Hydrogen and Clean Fuel Production
Hydrogen has gained global attention as a crucial component in decarbonization efforts. Currently, it is primarily used as a chemical feedstock, with the fertilizer industry being the largest consumer. Most hydrogen production relies on steam reforming of hydrocarbons like natural gas, a process that emits CO₂ and often lacks carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).
Clean hydrogen can be produced through water electrolysis using low-carbon power sources or by integrating CCUS into steam reforming plants. However, widespread adoption faces several barriers, including high production costs, infrastructure limitations, and the need for technological advancements to improve efficiency and scalability.
While not all hydrogen ambitions may be realized, its most promising applications include producing clean fertilizers, chemical feedstocks, and select transport solutions.
